Drew Daley walks away from the love of his life, Courtney Page, when his orders with the Marine Corps took him to Afghanistan. Eighteen months later, he returns a broken man.
If you follow my blog and/or reviews, you know that I tend to read paranormal, urban fantasy, hockey romances, and rock romances. Yes, it is kind of a strange combination. Anyway, I started reading the Barriers Series because the first book fell in the hockey romance category. I am so glad I continued this series. If I were to have looked at this book as a standalone, I probably would have passed it up, which would have been unfortunate because I loved this book.
Sara Shirley does such a tremendous job with her character development. My heart completely goes out to all of her characters. They are all so believable, facing real-life issues. None of them are perfect, but that is what makes them charming.
We met Drew in Josh & Sam's story Hidden Barriers (Barriers #2). Drew is Sam’s younger brother who fell in love with Josh’s little sister Courtney Page, who we met in Frozen Barriers (Barriers #1).
The plot is noteworthy. The ending was incredible. I don’t want to give anything away, so I’m not going to say much except: Drew suffers from PTSD when he gets back from the war, Courtney married someone else, and he meets Cole Porter, the women who could potentially heal his broken heart. Let me just say, wow.
You could probably read this book as a standalone, but I recommend that you read the rest of the series first. There are things that happen, especially in book two, that are important to this story.
If you have already read books in the Barriers series, you will definitely want to read this novel. If you haven’t tried this series and enjoy contemporary romances with genuine characters you will want to pick up this series. Sara Shirley is a gifted writer. I could not put this book down, flying through it in a day.
